“God grant us the courage to change those things we can, the serenity to accept the things we can’t, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Hey everyone! The end of January 2021 is almost here. This month we went #booxploringtheworld to Haiti, with Edwidge Danticat’s ‘Breath, Eyes, Memory’.
This is the story of Sophie, who was left with her aunt while her mother moved to New York. Years later, she moved to the States too so she could live with her mother. The girl, wise beyond her years, looks at the US and Haiti too under a different lens. She shows the courage to be strong and break barriers, even though she knows she’ll have to suffer the consequences. The story has a somber mood all throughout, but is uplifting. It introduces us to the tales of four women: Sophie, her mother, aunt, and grandmother, all of whom went through similar circumstances but had different approaches to life. The underlying theme of women’s empowerment and mental health is strongly portrayed.
If anyone else is looking to start exploring Haitian literature too, I’d definitely recommend this one or any other book by the author. But the amount of importance given to Haiti itself (its history and its people) is not much. So if you want to know more about Haiti, I suggest you look elsewhere.
